NaNoTools

I’m planning on entering this year’s NaNoWriMo.  This won’t be my first time entering, but I have yet to win; real life keeps getting in the way.  This year I will be living in the barracks in Halifax, and apart from my classes I will have nothing but time.  With minor distractions (literally minors, they’re [...]

Experience required?

As I previously mentioned, I’m doing some work on RentACoder.com.  I’ve noticed a few trends there though. Unreasonable maximum bids: Emergency!  Expert needed!  Must fix absolutely everything wrong with my system!  $25 maximum bid Unreasonable communication requirements: Bidder must be reachable at all times, 24 hours a day, Antarctica time zone Unreasonable experience requirements: Bidder [...]

Debugging Web Services

As previously mentioned, I’m doing some coding for clients, something I haven’t done in some time.  One of the projects works with the Facebook API.  Specifically, it allows users to set their status through another website. However, hunting through the docs was painful.  The official docs aren’t organized in a logical way (I had to [...]

Rent me

It’s been a while since I’ve posted.  As previously promised, there is no set schedule. Anyway, I’ve re-found the site Rent a Coder, where programmers (such as myself) can find projects to work on, without dealing with the hassle of advertising, accounting, management, etc.  In other words, for an administration fee (taken from my payment), [...]

Free Followers?

I recently tried a couple “free followers” services on Twitter.  I came back later, and my timeline was filled with tweets from people I know that I didn’t follow.  It turns out that you get more followers by the system automatically following others on your behalf.  Also, I made a tweet every two hours advertising [...]

Music Recovery

Somehow, I managed to screw up my music collection. I was experimenting with recovering data from a semi-fried USB stick.  Then, with it still plugged in, I tried to sync my iPod music using MediaMonkey. Little did I realize, all my drive letters had been mixed up. The computer thinks that the USB stick is [...]

URL Shorteners = Evil?

Over at the Coding Horror, Jeff Atwood has mentioned exactly what he thinks of URL shorteners.  Oddly enough, even though I’m writing a plugin that requires the use of a shortener, I agree with him. Shorteners, although convenient and necessary for microblogging, have a tendency to obscure the linking structure that makes the web usable.  [...]

Microblogging Plugin

I’ve decided to try my hand at WordPress plugin writing.  Although not yet publicly released, I’m currently running WPMicro on my blog.  Currently, it only announces my posts on Twitter, but I’m planning to add support for Identi.ca and other microblogging sites.

Computer Music

I’ve always been a fan of background music, and to that end I use MediaMonkey on my computer pretty much constantly.  Yesterday, the new version of MM was released.  Although there are apparently over 500 improvements, I haven’t seen any yet, but I’m not much of a power-user.  I pretty much use it to listen [...]

Contributing in an open-source world

Call it what you like. Open source, Free software, Communist code, whatever.  One of the principles of this software is that anyone can modify it.  It seems like alot of software is leaning towards the bazaar style of accepting user contributions to the code, allowing it to adapt and evolve to meet user needs. Today, [...]
