Suing terrorists?
It looks like my government has come up with a plan that allows private individuals to sue “foreign states, individuals and organizations that commit and support terrorism”1. It may sound like a good idea up front to some people, but there are a few issues I have.
- How are we going to sue an organization such as al-Qaida and hope to get money from them? We have soldiers out there looking for terrorists, and a C-7 rifle is much more effective than a lawsuit.
- What happens when other countries make a similar law? Then who gets to define “terrorist”? Can Afghanistan start suing Canadian soldiers for deaths or injuries made during this fight?
It feels to me like a “feel-good” idea, with no real backing strength to it, an idea which is strengthened by the drafter, who wishes to “create a legacy for her husband”.
